The Haven Lancaster
Our Programs
English Classes
The key to resettlement in the United States is gaining fluency in English. At the Haven, we build community by providing lessons to women and men which address language goals, as well as meeting cultural, emotional, vocational, and spiritual needs. To help us meet these needs, volunteers are needed to teach English classes, help in an English class, and provide private tutoring. Your support can make a significant difference in their lives.
Transportation & Driving Lessons
Because the Afghans have recently arrived and can’t get around on their own, we provide transportation for men, women, and children who come to the Haven. Drivers are needed on Monday and Thursday mornings for women and children, and Monday and Wednesday evenings for men.
Volunteers assist individuals in obtaining PA drivers’ licenses, passing the PA learner’s permit exam, and learning practical driving skills.
Children’s Program
While mothers study English and participate in other program activities, we provide childcare for children from infancy to preschool age. Our program includes playtime for babies and toddlers and an educational preparedness curriculum for preschoolers. These children are dealing with major life changes and trauma and respond to loving and patient care with a high ratio of helpers to children. We currently provide care on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings from 9:15-noon.
Teen Mentors
Volunteers are needed to provide support and mentorship to Afghan teens and young men and women who face many additional challenges as they settle in the US. They assist in navigating cultural adjustments, educational challenges, and social integration, helping teens build confidence and a sense of belonging.
Men’s Program
Afghan men gather once a month to share tea and learn practical skills about living in the US. These events offer time to relax, fellowship, and develop relationships. Volunteers welcome guests, set up, prepare tea and snacks, and clean up. They may also lead discussions, assist with forms, and provide guidance on life skills.
Special Events
Celebrating special occasions together builds community and trust. During the year, special times including Thanksgiving, Christmas, Fourth of July, and the Afghan New Year give us reasons to gather and celebrate. Volunteers help in a variety of ways (from decorating to transportation) depending on their skills and abilities.
